Kim Kashkashian, internationally recognized as a unique voice on the viola, was born of Armenian parents in Michigan. She studied the viola with Karen Tuttle and legendary violist Walter Trampler at the Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. Since fall 2000 she has taught viola and chamber music at New England Conservatory.

The list goes on…Grammy Award winning, a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she has worked tirelessly to broaden the range of technique, advocacy, and repertoire for the viola working with the great composers of our time including Kurtág, Penderecki, Schnittke, Pärt among many others.  She has appeared as a soloist with Berlin, London, Vienna, New York, and recorded since 1985 with the prestigious ECM label. Her roots run deep in all circles with mentors including Walter Trampler and Karen Tuttle along with Felix Galimir and many others. 

Kim founded Music For Food, a musician-led initiative to fight hunger in our local communities founded in 2010 in Boston.  Her students have careers around the globe in major orchestras, chamber groups and as soloists and teachers.  Truly a musician and human of our generation, her legacy already stands on it’s own.
