F A Q
“I realize more every day how good you are at cultivating growth”
- Audrey Lee, violinist + professor
What is a typical session?
Coaching + Consulting Sessions
We begin by reviewing your pre-session form to make sure I understand where you are, your goals for our time together, and then we dive in. We often:
• Explore a topic through questions and discussion, observing how you answer questions (or not!)
• Challenge existing mindsets and cultivate new ones through observation, new knowledge, research projects
• Identify issues that are critical to your goals
• Identify main focus points, ideas, directions and craft strategies for the shifts that are needed
• Create exercises/assignments to help you move
• Assign research projects to develop your foundational knowledge
• Organize the structure and timeline for the steps you need to take
• Identify goals and goal markers so you can feel and measure your progress and celebrate your achievements
• Laugh, cry, challenge each other, celebrate - we never know what we will discover
• Release what’s been holding you back and send you forward with confidence and a strategy that is uniquely honed for you.
What do I need for an online session?
I use the Zoom platform for my online sessions - I like simple and have found zoom to be just that. Each online session is recorded and available for download and review afterwards.
Here is what you need:
• Computer, phone, tablet (shut down all programs and applications for optimal connection speed)
• For non-performing sessions, I recommend a headset for clarity of speaking and listening
• Download the Zoom App or create an account to access via their website
• When you book your session a meeting id will be generated to sign into our session.
• A quiet dedicated space for our time together.
You are welcome to sign into the session anytime prior if you want to become more familiar with zoom and your setup. I recommend signing in 5-10 minutes prior to our session in case there are any surprises.
I’m curious but unsure what I would focus on for my initial session?
Completely normal! Contact me prior to our session through my contact page or social media and we can focus a good starting point together through email dialogue. If we need it, or if you prefer, I also encourage clients to schedule a 15-minute session and we can use that session to focus where to begin in person.
I have too many things—where do I start?
Often the most difficult choice is creating structure on how to tackle the ideas or issues we have. I love exploring, discovering and shaping the flow of the large picture and through that we will discover what starting point makes the most sense. We can work on this through pre-session emails or a 15-minute session.
Do you give homework?
I believe that to truly find alignment and authenticity, the deep work needs to be done by each of us. I use our time in session to focus what would be helpful to clarify, research or discover. Sometimes this could be viewed as homework, often it is work you need to do to move forward. Depending on the session, I often write summary emails within 48-hours of our sessions to clarify in text what we discussed and what your next steps and goals are. And…instead of ‘homework’ I call it “FunWork!”
What if our session ends early?
I want to spend the time we need to give you the insight, tools, structure, and inspiration you need to move and take action. If we end early - I charge for the time we’ve used in 15-minute increments.
What if our session runs over?
Often we can find ourselves needing more time to dig into the issues that we’ve discovered. If we reach the end of our scheduled time and both have the ability to extend the session, we will do so and billing will continue at my usual rates. If not, we will wrap our time together with clear goals, strategies, and points to accomplish before we schedule our next session together.
Do your charge for emails, assignment development or feedback between sessions?
There is often necessary feedback on assignments, writing projects, and other forms of work that stem from our session to help clarify how you are doing or questions that come up as you move forward. I view our back and forth over email/text/messenger as an extension of the time, energy and resource commitment that we both engage during our session. There are no additional fees for this communication.
violin, Fiddle, or Chamber music coaching
Do you teach fiddling?
If you’re gonna play in Texas, you gotta have a fiddle in the band. Yes! I love teaching fiddling tunes and digging into a part of my life that is one of my great joys.
Do I need to know how to fiddle to schedule a session?
I teach all levels of fiddling and love introducing violinists to the world of fiddling. I identify basic changes in your technique alongside what remains the same. In our initial session my goal is to have you playing 1-2 tunes and feeling confident that more are just a few steps away.
Do you teach fiddle tunes by ear or with sheet music?
Both. For those who like sheet music, I have written out tunes that I provide with your session or you can try them out on your own here. If you want to learn by ear we just dive in. For those new to learning by ear, I can help you develop your unique style as we go.
Do you do online group sessions or chamber music coaching?
Online teaching takes a few minutes to adjust our interaction through the video and microphone. I’ve found online teaching to be a very effective part of a teaching strategy for all levels and students. I ask the group to review a few simple guidelines prior to our session:
• All members should be visible
• When I need to cover individual needs, I may ask to put the camera on an individual for part of the session. Try this out prior to our session so you have a process in place should we need it.
• Speaking can only be one at a time so know that we will make the time to hear all voices
• For chamber music coaching, scan and email a pdf (200dpi minimum) of the movements you want to work on 24-hours prior to our session
Do you see people in person when you are traveling?
Yes! I travel nationally and internationally ~200 days a year and you can find my public touring schedule with the Miró Quartet here. My private schedule is normally booked 1-2 years in advance so please contact me directly if you are curious about when I might be in your area.
Do you offer package rates or discount groups of sessions?
Each time we meet I value your time as much as my own and because of this currently keep my rate the same for all sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
To make sure I am at my best for each session, I am very specific when I open up my schedule for session together. I turn away others once your session is booked. In order to give me time to open up your session to others, I have a 48-hour cancellation policy without charge. Cancellation within the 48-hour window will be charged 75% payment of your session fee.
What if I didn’t find you helpful?
I’d love to know. If it becomes obvious during the session for either of us, please bring it up and I will too. I want this to be the right fit for both of us and I am not the right fit for everyone. Curiosity and exploring is the necessity of growth and movement, so I am grateful for the opportunity to serve you. We will discuss what direction to go and move forward from there.
