Canadian-American violinist William Fedkenheuer is a two-time Grammy nominee, Artistic Director of the Toronto Summer Music Festival, and a member of the Miró Quartet. Recognized internationally as a performer, educator, and consultant, he brings more than 25 years of experience at the highest levels of chamber music, including his work with the Miró, Fry Street, and Borromeo String Quartets.

As Artistic Director of Toronto Summer Music, he leads an internationally recognized festival that brings together a high-level mainstage concert series with a dynamic academy and mentorship program for emerging artists in strings, piano, and vocal performance. His work in this role reflects a broader commitment to connecting artistic excellence with mentorship, community engagement, and long-term impact.

He has appeared on many of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall, Esterházy Castle, Suntory Hall, and the National Concert Hall in Taipei, with broadcasts and features on NPR, PBS, NHK, the Discovery Channel, and in Strings and The Strad. His discography includes Grammy-nominated albums and a widely acclaimed Beethoven cycle with the Miró Quartet.

Collaboration and new work have been central to his artistic life, including commissions and premieres by composers such as Kevin Puts, Osvaldo Golijov, and Gunther Schuller, and performances with artists including Leon Fleisher, Sasha Cooke, Audra McDonald, Midori, David Shifrin, and Dawn Upshaw.

Originally from Calgary, Alberta, his musical voice was shaped by both classical training and early roots in Canadian fiddle traditions. He was named Canadian National Fiddle Champion in 1989 and made his solo debut with the Calgary Philharmonic at age 17. He studied at Rice University and Indiana University and spent formative summers at the Music Academy of the West, Tanglewood Music Center, and the Steans Music Institute at Ravinia.

Fedkenheuer serves as Professor of Practice in Violin and Chamber Music at the University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music, where he co-directs the Young Professional String Quartet Program and mentors emerging artists. Alongside his performing and teaching, he maintains an active role as a consultant and professional development coach, working with individuals, ensembles, and organizations to clarify direction, strengthen identity, and align vision with action.

A violinist, educator, and artistic leader, his work connects performance, mentorship, and vision to create meaningful artistic impact.

He lives in Austin, Texas, with his wife Leah, their two sons, Max and Olli, and their dogs, Frizzy and Lola. Outside of music, he is an avid hiker, fly-fisherman, and enthusiastic explorer of great burgers.
