Hoebig was a paragon of interpretive sensitivity, projecting vibrant sound into the hall even as he lavished the impassioned messages with ardent and poetic shading

Desmond Hoebig

Desmond “Des” Hoebig is a total Canadian Badass on the cello and in the teaching studio. Professor of Cello at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, Des has known me since I was a little boy growing up in Calgary and the Orford Quartet came to perform and teach. His sister, Gwen, is an equal giant of the violin and there is something very special about the Hoebig magic onstage and off. What I admire most about Des is his unflappability both onstage and off, how he has developed and chosen his own career paths, and his mentorship of students and young professionals on their own adventures of designing a life for themselves. I’m looking forward to exploring topics from Maple Syrup to knowing ‘how you know’ in crafting your career and life and how Des has navigated his. Don’t let the glasses fool you, Des also has a mischievous side that he loves to let out!

Love you Des - next beer is on me, eh?
